Yahoo Keeper League Guide: Settings, Eligibility & Analysis

February 12, 2026KeeperTracker Team7 min read

Yahoo Fantasy is one of the oldest and most popular fantasy platforms, and millions of keeper leagues run on it every year. Yahoo has solid built-in keeper features — better than ESPN's, though not as deep as Fantrax's. But there are still gaps that make tracking keeper eligibility harder than it should be.

This guide covers how Yahoo handles keeper leagues, where the platform falls short, and how to get a complete keeper eligibility analysis for your Yahoo league.

How Yahoo Fantasy Handles Keepers

Yahoo's keeper system is more automated than most platforms. Here's what it does natively:

  • Keeper count: Commissioners set how many keepers each team can designate.
  • Keeper cost: Yahoo supports round-based keeper costs. Players are kept at the round they were drafted, with optional cost adjustments.
  • Keeper deadline: Yahoo has a built-in keeper selection window that commissioners can configure. Managers select keepers through the platform, and the deadline is enforced automatically.
  • Draft integration: Kept players are automatically removed from the draft pool and assigned to their team at the designated round.

This is more than ESPN or Sleeper offer out of the box. Yahoo actually handles the basic keeper workflow end-to-end without requiring the commissioner to manually assign players on a draft board.

Where Yahoo's Keeper Tools Fall Short

Despite the solid foundation, Yahoo has meaningful gaps for leagues with any complexity:

Limited Multi-Year Tracking

Yahoo tracks keepers within a single season, but historical keeper data across multiple seasons is limited. If your league has rules like "max 3 years kept" or "cost increases by one round per year," Yahoo doesn't calculate this automatically across seasons. The commissioner needs to track year-over-year history externally.

No Waiver Pickup Cost Rules

What round does a waiver wire pickup cost to keep? Most leagues assign a last-round or fixed-round cost, but Yahoo doesn't have a setting for this. The commissioner has to define and enforce this rule manually.

No Value Analysis

Yahoo tells you who you can keep, but not who you should keep. There's no surplus value calculation, no comparison of keeper cost vs. projected draft position, and no league-wide keeper landscape view.

No Trade Impact on Keeper Cost

If a player gets traded mid-season, does their keeper cost change? Yahoo doesn't connect trade history to keeper eligibility. That's on the commissioner to track.

Finding Your Yahoo League ID

To use external analysis tools, you'll need your Yahoo league ID:

  • Go to your league page on Yahoo Fantasy
  • Look at the URL — it'll look like: football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/f1/12345
  • The number at the end is your league ID
  • For baseball it's /b1/12345, basketball /nba/l/12345, hockey /hockey/12345

Yahoo OAuth and API Access

Unlike ESPN and Sleeper, Yahoo requires OAuth authentication for any API access — even for public leagues. This means external tools need you to log in with your Yahoo account and grant permission to read your league data.

KeeperTracker supports Yahoo through OAuth. The process:

  • Select Yahoo as your platform on KeeperTracker
  • You'll be redirected to Yahoo to sign in and approve access
  • KeeperTracker reads your league data (read-only — it can't make changes)
  • Your keeper analysis is generated automatically

The OAuth flow is a one-time step. Once connected, your league data is accessible for the season.

Tips for Yahoo Keeper League Commissioners

  • Use the built-in keeper deadline: Unlike Sleeper, Yahoo enforces keeper deadlines automatically. Set it at least 2 weeks before your draft.
  • Document custom rules in the league message board: Yahoo's settings cover the basics, but edge cases (trade keeper costs, waiver pickup rounds, max years) need to be written down somewhere everyone can see.
  • Keep a year-over-year spreadsheet: Since Yahoo doesn't track multi-season keeper history well, maintain a shared document with who was kept each year and at what cost. This is essential for escalating costs and year limits.
  • Set keeper costs before the selection window opens: As commissioner, review and adjust any keeper costs that need manual updates (cost escalation, traded players) before managers start making their selections.

Yahoo vs Other Platforms for Keeper Leagues

  • Yahoo vs ESPN: Yahoo is better for keepers. Built-in keeper selection, automatic draft integration, and deadline enforcement give it a clear edge over ESPN's bare-bones approach.
  • Yahoo vs Sleeper: Tie, but different strengths. Yahoo has better native keeper tools; Sleeper has a better app and community features. For football keepers, Sleeper's draft board is easier to work with. For baseball, Yahoo has broader sport support.
  • Yahoo vs Fantrax: Fantrax wins for complex leagues (contracts, salary caps, minor leagues). Yahoo wins for simplicity and mainstream adoption. If your league has standard keeper rules, Yahoo handles them well enough.

Get Started

Yahoo gives commissioners more keeper tools than most platforms, but the gaps — especially multi-year tracking and value analysis — still create work. KeeperTracker fills those gaps by connecting to Yahoo via OAuth and running a full eligibility analysis across your entire league. Connect your league and get your keeper report before the deadline hits.
